Divide the grid into L-shaped regions using numbers that measure the distance to the bend.
Controls
Paint L-shaped regions with legs exactly one cell wide. A number gives the number of cells from that cell to the bend, counting both ends. A 1 sits on the bend. Each region contains at most three numbers.
